Hello everyone!

Lots going on here in Kagy so I'll try to keep this letter concise. Last time we wrote about starting bibles studies and last Wednesday we started a home group bible study at the home of a few girls in our church. Our goal is for the church to spend more time in fellowship and more time studying God's word. Last week was great and I'm looking forward to tonight's gathering.

I think next week Wayne and I will begin a bible study for men. I will most likely be leading it as we look at what the bible says about manhood. Please pray that God would use this time to teach the guys in our church what it means to be a man and that they would grow in the understanding of who God wants them to be.

I met last week with Yura who will be helping me lead a bible study in a rehab center in the nearby village of Sloboda and we are going to meet with the overseer of this center sometime in the next couple of weeks to work out the details of starting a bible study. Pray for us that God would give us wisdom as we lead bible studies, pray for the guys that God would ground them in His word and help them to grow in Him and that they would learn to rely up Him for the strength they need to overcome their addictions.

Last night we had one of our monthly evenings for senior citizens. This was the largest we've had yet with almost 40 people. We barely had enough tables to seat them all! After dinner everyone sang traditional Ukrainian songs, it was great. I captured a few of the songs on my camera and posted them on our blog [ http://footesinukraine.blogspot.com/ ]. Pray that God opens the hearts of all who come to these nights that they would know God's salvation.

For the last couple years a lady in our church has been actively looking for organizations that distribute humanitarian aid so that our church can help the poor and needy in our area. Our church has established some good connections and we've been able to help a lot of people. This last Monday we were given a truck load of used clothes and shoes as well as packages of food to be distributed to needy families in our region. Please pray that God would be glorified as we seek to help those in need and that God would give our church wisdom and guidance as to how best distribute everything.

While we were unloading the humanitarian aid and taking it down to the church basement I managed to tweak my back. I think I just strained a muscle and it is not too serious. Please pray that God would heal my back.

Liese and I have been spending a lot of time playing music with people lately as we teach new worship songs and help them work out different instrumental parts. It has been fun playing music more often and our band is getting better. I'm hoping that sometime soon I can put down the guitar and play bass again.

Hello everyone!

We are back home in Kagarlyk after about three weeks in Chernigov. We had a great time there and were blessed to be able to help out teaching at the Sunday and Wednesday bibles studies. We got to know the church a lot better and were able to spend time with our missionary friends that we rarely see anymore. Please continue to pray for Jake Knotts, the pastor of the church there, as it has been three months and the doctors still do not know exactly what is wrong with his kidneys.

We are glad to be back in Kagarlyk and we are looking at a busy year ahead.

We are praying about starting a home group bible study sometime soon. Please pray for God to lead us as to where to have the bible study.

Danny has also been praying for a while now about starting a bible study with the rehab center that our church has been helping for the last couple years. We may start a bible study sometime this month with the short term goal of simply teaching the bible to those in the center, and the long term goal of starting a bible study in the village of Sloboda where the rehab center is located. One of the things we are praying about this year is starting bible studies in the villages surrounding Kagarlyk. Please pray that God would lead us as we start a bible study with the rehab center and as we seek to start bible studies in other villages as well.

Please continue to pray that God would lead us, protect us, fill us daily with His Spirit, and that He would bless the church here in Kagarlyk.

Hi everyone!

A couple days ago Liese and I had a conversation about the line "always winter and never Christmas" from C.S. Lewis' book The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. See, I always thought of Christmas as the beginning of winter and once Christmas was over, winter hit. So I missed what Lewis was getting at - Christmas is the one spark of warm goodness in the middle of the cold bleakness that we call winter.

So anyway that is where we are now - the cold bleakness of winter is upon us and Christmas is coming soon.

Here is a quick update on what we've been doing and our plans for the next couple months.

A couple weeks ago I went out to the city of Rokitno to offer my AV skills (and our church’s AV equipment) at a youth AIDS awareness rally. A church in Rokitno that our church has been working with for for a about 5 years now organized the rally and they asked us to help out. It was great to be able to help and I was encouraged by the church's desire to be driving force for change in their community.

Our church has been going through a series of teachings on what it means to fulfill the mission that God has given us. It has been really encouraging for everyone and the Sunday School workers asked if I could meet with them and go through the series because they miss so many of the teachings. So we've been getting together each week to study one of the topics. I've also been meeting with Micah Claycamp and a couple of the young men in our church for a kind of "discipleship" group. I'm the translator. Kind of weird, but it is cool to spend time with these guys in the word and encouraging them. All this has reminded me more of the need for small group bible studies. We have been praying for a while about starting home-group bible studies. Please pray with us that God would lead us in the how, when, and where of this.

This Wednesday night we are having another of our nights for senior citizens. They are thinking about calling the nights "Golden Age" because it sounds pretty good in Ukrainian, kind of like "Golden Oldies" sounds in English. This month marks a full year that we've been doing these evenings. Our goal in doing them is simple: love the elderly in our city. After a year of doing these evenings we have about 20 people each time, a few have started coming to our Sunday services, and the city has noticed that we are doing something that they want to do but lack the resources so they are happy with us. We are praying about how to expand the ministry to be a stable monthly event and find more ways to invite and bring people to it. Please pray that this ministry would grow, be fruitful, and that the senior citizens in Kagarlyk would know the love of their Maker.

This week we are flying to North Carolina to spend Christmas and New Years with Danny's family at his sister's place. We'll be back in Ukraine on the 5th of January. After that we are planning on spending a couple weeks up in the city of Chernigov helping the church there. Jake Knott's who is the pastor of the church in Chernigov found out while he was in America that he has problems with his kidneys. So he is staying in America for treatment. Jake was supposed to be back in Ukraine in early December so that the McNamee family could go to the States for Christmas, but since he is not coming back we offered to fill in for him so that the McNamee's could take their trip and not waste the tickets they had already purchased.

Please pray for Jake, pray for the church in Chernigov during this time, pray for us as we go up there to help out. We need your prayers and are thankful that you pray for us,

Update from Balázs, Leah, & Ellie Stanzel

We have another update from Leah and Balázs! Here it is:

Our Family
Ellie is continuing to amaze us! She began walking this past month and says a couple more words (she now says baba, mama, dada,and bow whenever she sees or hear a dog). She understands and responds to both languages. She loves to dance and does so whenever a phone rings or she
hears any music. Balázs has been feeling for some time the desire to study more and be more equipped for the teaching and leading of the church. With the help of Leah's brother, we found a seminary type program he can do on-line for free! We are very excited about this. Please pray that the Lord would give him time to be faithful in studying and that he would be taught by the Lord through these courses.

Please pray for our upcoming trip to the states. We are coming to California on November 28th and will be there through most of December. Please pray for our travel (connections to be made, travelling with Ellie, health before the flights). We would love to see as many of you as possible; please let us know when you are available.

Church
This month began with a team from the bible college coming for a weekend outreach. On Friday night, we had a fellowship time with games, sharing, and of course lots of food. Saturday, the guys went to do some construction work at the church building we rent and the girls helped Leah make Hungarian bean soup for 50 people. Our house may never be the same again after that event! On Sunday, we had the church monthly potluck after the service and enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship together. It was a great team and a great weekend!

Balázs changed the format of the college group on Wednesday nights. He now gives the students
"homework" so that they come prepared to study the text in more of a question and answer-type format. In just the few weeks since this began, we have seen a huge amount of excitement for God's Word and participation from the students. Please pray that they would grow in their depth with the Lord and with the Word. Please also pray for Géza, one of the elders who will be leading this group while we are away.

Balázs has been meeting these past weeks with the member of the worship team to study what the scriptures say about what God's design is for worship individually and collectively. Balázs has been transformed by the preparation and teaching of this topic. Please pray for him as he learns and teaches and for the teaching to have an effect on the worship in the church.
We continued with the pre-marital counseling with the couples in our church but have decided to postpone further counseling until closer to both wedding dates. Please pray for these young couples to grow together with God at the center during their time of engagements.

Balázs is continuing to teach through the book of Acts on Sunday mornings. We are very excited
with the topics that the Lord is bringing forth through His Word to this Church to see how the church will grow and respond as a result. Please pray for these teaching to be Spirit-led and for one of the elders Tamas as he teaches while we are away.

The women's ministry continues to meet monthly for studies as well as throughout the month in the various small discipleship groups. We have seen a great deal of fruit in just the couple of months since this began. Last month's teaching by one of the elder's wives was a great reminder to the ladies about quiet times with the Lord and ministry within the body. Leah began meeting with the girls from her small group individually to disciple these women. Please pray for Leah as she teaches on faith this month and as she and the other leaders reach out and disciple the
women.

Outreach
Balázs also changed the format at the prison this past month and saw great improvements among the guys. He now teaches for a shorter time to the large group and then goes to an office to individually meet with some of the guys. In the very first week he saw a much greater receptivity to the teaching. He also began the gospel of John with the guys as he saw they lack knowledge of sin and remorse over sin and thus grace and forgiveness seem worthless to them. Please pray for Bibles for the inmates, for Balázs as he teaches the gospel, and as he meets with the guys individually.

Balazs also continues to teach at the Catholic school through the bible to a young boy. Please pray for his faithfulness in this and clarity for the teachings.

September update from Leah and Baláz

Our Family
Thank you for your prayers regarding Balázs' visa. We were interviewed by a very nice guy who gave us a 10 year multi-entry visa!! With that, our trip plans have been finalized and we will be leaving for the states on November 20th for a week in Houston and then onto California for a few weeks. We will spend a week in Idaho and then be back in California until January 2nd. We look forward to seeing all of you then. We also had a great time visiting family and a few friends while we were in Budapest.

Balázs' mom came for a few days this month and we all had a great time visiting. She especially enjoyed having some Ellie time and being able to watch her for us while we had some meetings for the church.

Ellie continues to amaze us. She began taking three and four steps this past week and will be fully walking soon it seems. She is a huge source of joy and an amazing tool the Lord uses to teach us daily about ourselves and our relationship with Him.

Church
We began the process for registering the church this month and are in the paperwork process. Please pray for us to have wisdom with the paper work and for the officials at the court to approve all of the documents.

This past month during our monthly church potluck, we had a discussion with the church about ministry within and outside the church and the direction the church is going with missions. The time was very good as we heard people's perspectives from the church and were able to share honestly with them. Please pray as we monthly have these types of discussions with the church after the potlucks.

The students returned in full force this past month and it was great to reconnect with students from last year as well as welcome some new students to our group. Many of the students had difficult times while they were away, please pray that the Lord would use His Word to restore them and to use the body to minister to their needs. Also, some of the new students that are coming do not know Jesus as their Savior, please pray that the Lord would reveal Himself to these young adults. Please pray for Balázs as he teaches this group and for both of us as we disciple these students.

Our first women's bible study was great! The Lord used the time to build friendships and accountability as well as showing us through His Word how to establish Jesus as the center of our lives. Many women shared their struggles in this area and the ladies were all encouraged by one another. Nearly every women told Leah that the small prayer groups were a huge blessing for them as well. Please pray for our next meeting in two weeks that Leah would have wisdom in leading this group and for one of the elders wives as she teaches this time.

Balázs began the preparation for the worship team bible study and will meet with the guys this week. Please pray as he prepares for these times, as he teaches, and for the group to see God's design for the worship in our church. We began pre-marital counseling this past month with one of the young couples in the church who desire to be married and we will be beginning with the other couple this month as well. Please pray that the Lord would teach us and strengthen our marriage as we teach this and for the Lord to allow these young couples to see His true design and blessings of marriage.

Thank you for your prayers regarding Balázs teaching at the Catholic school. He has decided to teach through the bible again there this year. Please pray for Balazs to be faithful as he teaches this young child. Please also pray for Balázs as he weekly prepares for the mid-week bible study and the Sunday service to be led by the Lord and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit for the leading of the church.

Outreach

We have a team coming from the bible college this month to encourage the church. We will meet together on Friday evening for games and fellowship. Saturday we will do practical work and Sunday we will have our monthly potluck together with the team. Please pray for the team to be an encouragement to the church as we spend time together with them.

This month was better for Balázs at the prison. He keeps his lesson and meeting time with the guys shorter which allows the guys to have an easier time paying attention. Please pray for Balázs to be able to minister the Word with boldness and clarity and to have an increasing amount of love for these guys.

Hello everyone! I know it has been a long time since I last updated our blog, but we have been very busy with a recent outreach, retreat, move, and classes at the Bible College. It has been a little stressful, a lot of fun and really busy. But we are now all situated back at the Bible College and are really excited about everything going on here. Please check out our blog at the link below. Also please pray for us for our scouting trip to the Northeast the end of October to a city called João Pessoa, where we plan to start a church next year. Balázs & Leah & Joelle Stanzel from Pécs, Hungary

Our Family
We were very blessed this month by a visit from some good friends of ours from the bible college and one of their brother's and his wife (who are on a few months mission trip around the world). The time was a tremendous blessing and encouragement to us both. Ellie is 9 months already!! She is trying to walk (along everything and with help form us). We found out this month she also has anemia (Leah does also) and has to take some iron drops that make her stomach hurt pretty badly. She also enjoys testing limits and seeing how bratty she can be (we thought this didn't come until she was 2??), but we are having fun with it. Please pray for her stomach as she deals with this medicine, and for us to have wisdom with her eating, sleep, and discipline.

We are traveling Budapest this week to visit with Balazs' dad and his siblings and to apply for his visa to visit the states. We hope to be on the central coast for the month of December. Please pray for our trip to Budapest and for the embassy to grant Balazs his visa.

Church
As the summer comes to a close, we look forward to a changing city with the influx of nearly 60,000 university students. We are excited to have our students return and to welcome new faces. Many of our students are English majors and want to reach out to the nearly 20,000 international students that study here. Please pray for the Lord to guide as as this new year
starts with the students. A couple of the young adult guys in our church want to begin a teenage group for the few teenage boys in our church who are currently do not have a separate meeting. Please pray that the Lord would provide time for this and wisdom to Balazs and the guys leading this. In two weeks we will have our first ladies bible study. Thank you for
your prayers as we have seen the Lord really bring together Leah and the elder's wives in preparing for this. We have decided to have guided discussion time followed by small group prayer and accountability groups. Please pray as we prepare and begin this that the women would come wanting to be changed and that we would see Jesus in this above all else. Balázs will also be beginning the bible study with the worship team as they look into what the Word says about worship. Please pray as he prepares for these times, as he teaches, and for the group to see God's design for the worship in our church. Two young couples in the church desire to be married and we will be beginning marriage counseling with each of them.

Please pray for us to be able to lead this as it will be our first time and we want to help these couples as they enter into marriage. As fall begins again, Balazs was asked to teach the bible at the Catholic school again twice a week. Please pray as we seek the Lord for direction as there are many things to consider in making this decision. We continue to have monthly potlucks with the church. Last month we BBQ'd hamburgers and everyone was quite impressed with real "American" hamburgers. It was a great time and we always look forward to these times of fellowship. Please pray for Balázs as he weekly prepares for the mid-week bible study and the Sunday service to be led by the Lord and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit for the leading of the church.

Outreach
This month was difficult for Balazs at the prison. The inmates were not attentive and were mocking the Word. Please pray for Balazs to be able to minister the Word with boldness and clarity and to have an increasing amount of love for these guys.

Other
Leah had a break from Hungarian lessons for a couple months as her teacher was away. Please pray that she would be able to jump back in where she left off and that she would be faithful to study during the week.

News from Kagarlyk, Ukraine

Greetings from Kagarlyk!

Summer has come to an end here in Ukraine but instead of the usual peace of mind that we gain from that experience we are faced with a busy schedule. I guess that makes up for a mellow summer. Let me bring you up to date on our summer and what is ahead of us.

This summer our church stepped back from the usual full throttle/ make every moment count/ do as much as we possibly can schedule that we have had the last couple summers. We felt that God had other things for us and that this year we should focus more on personal ministry. Instead of organizing concerts we just sat in public places to play music and talk to people. Instead of soccer tournaments a couple people made some portable soccer goals and have started once a week to head out to the school fields with their friends to play pick up games of soccer. Instead of a huge vacation bible school the children's ministry decided to spend more time with the kids that come to church and visit them in their homes and now that summer is over instead of being tired out from a long summer they are ready for the school year and preparing to expand the children's ministry. I don't think this change in ministry direction will be permanent but it has been good for our church to move from an event oriented way of looking at evangelism to a personal way of looking at evangelism.

Our role in all this was really low key and I spent most of my time doing more "pastoral" stuff like meeting with people and preparing bible studies as pastor Wayne and his family were in Australia for most of the summer.

Now that Wayne is back he is going full throttle with the bio-diesel production and over the summer they set up equipment to produce foam blocks. (Foam blocks, the translation of what they are called in Ukrainian, are cement building blocks that have a structure similar to foam so they are insulated and better for building than regular bricks.) The mushroom farm is now completely replaced by the block production which stands to be just as profitable a venture as mushroom farming, a lot less risky, and it offers more stable work hours for the workers. The goal in these enterprises remains the same: provide jobs for people in our town so they can work in Kagarlyk and not go to Kiev, teach Christian business ethics and in doing so build a platform to transform the business community in Kagarlyk. Please pray for these enterprises that God would continue to lead Wayne and that God would use them to transform the lives of the workers and the business community.

This week our church starts back up many of the ministries that take a break for summer. Computer classes, English lessons, and dance/aerobics are the main ones. Please pray for these ministries that God would use them to bring young people to Himself.

Coming up at the end of this month is a conference/retreat in Chernigov. It will be a small gathering of 5 or 6 of the smaller churches in the Calvary sphere in Ukraine. The theme of the conference will "The Church" and Danny will be teaching one of the main sessions. Our worship team will be leading worship for one of the sessions as well which is a huge step for our worship team. Please pray that the conference would be a time of growth and encouragement for all who go, and pray for Danny as he teaches.

Our Family

We celebrated our two year anniversary this month. It's hard to believe that it has only been two years because the Lord has blessed us so much in that time, we often feel like it has been much longer. Marriage is a definite blessing and we are so thankful to the Lord for giving us one another. Ellie is 8 months now and doing amazing. She got two teeth this month and they are sharp! She loves standing up on everything and walking along. She is a real source of joy and laughs in our house. We have no idea where she got it but she is a stubborn little one:) Please pray for wisdom and guidance as we learn how to love our child, discipline her, and teach her who the Lord is.

Church

In an answer to prayers, we were able to move the church to it's new location in a kindergarten. There is space for the children's ministry, an outdoor play area, and we can even have our monthly potlucks at the church now. It is a huge blessing, thank you for your prayers. Several people from our church attended the Southern Hungary conference with the theme of genuine faith. We were all encouraged as we heard teachings, fellowshipped, and sought the Lord together. Thank you for your prayers for Balász as he coordinated the worship for the conference. It went very well and he enjoyed leading on a couple of occasions with people from our church. In response to a need in the church for women's ministry, we will be starting a women's bible study beginning next month. Please pray for Leah to be led by the Lord as she leads this, for direction in teaching, wisdom with the women, and for encouraging others to also lead the group. Balázs will also be starting a bible study with the worship team as they look into what the Word says about worship. Please pray as he prepares for these times, as he teaches, and for the group to see God's design for the worship in our church. The college group continues to meet though many students are away for the summer. We look forward to their return in September and as the Lord continues to bless this time together in our home on Wednesday nights. Please pray for Balázs as he weekly prepares for this bible study and the Sunday service to be led by the Lord and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit for the leading of the church.

Outreach

While we were at the conference (which is at the Bible college), we were very happy to be able to lead two teams (one was a team from CC Irvine who were doing a VBS for the conference and the other was the Vision for Life students currently at the Bible college) to Palfa, the mental hospital where we led outreaches to during bible college. We were so encouraged that after a year of not being there the patients remembered us, the songs and most importantly the gospel. We had a great two days there and took Ellie with us, the patients loved her and we all rejoiced together. Some of those that had received Jesus previously are bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit's work in their lives. It was an amazing time.

Balázs was asked to give seminars at the summer conference for MEKDSZ, the large university organization in Hungary. He had a great few days meeting with many different people from all over the country and from many different churches. His seminars were on being double-minded from the book of James. It was a difficult subject but the Lord used it to teach him as well as the students at the camp.

The prison continues to be a challenge and a reward for Balázs as he visits there weekly to teach the bible. The prisoners have asked that he come more frequently or for a longer time. Please pray that the Lord would guide us with this, that the guys would repent and turn toward the Lord, and for Balász as he ministers to these guys.

Other

Leah has gotten to know two of the neighbor ladies who have babies around Ellie's age. Please pray for her Hungarian to be clear, for her as she develops friendships with these women, and for them to see Jesus in our lives.

Hi everyone!

Summer is in full swing here in Ukraine with the thunderstorms, humidity, heat, bugs, and bright wonderful sunshine. This summer is different though because it is not packed crazy full of a million things to do. It is kind of weird.

I've been spending a lot of time studying and meeting with people these last few weeks. With Wayne in Australia I teach each Sunday and we've been having bible studies/discussions every other Sunday evening. We've been going through the Gospel of Luke on Sunday mornings and talking about what a church is and does in the evenings.

Liese has been leading worship quite a bit, but it's been easier now that she is in a support role as others are able to lead.

This weekend (6th-8th) there will be a Franklin Graham festival in Kiev. They have been planning it for three years and it will be huge. A group from our church is going to help in whatever way they can, and the youtha group is going to go on Saturday. Please join with us and Christians all over Ukraine in praying that God would use this event to draw many to Himself.

Next week just about all the young people in our church are going to "Camp 120" a Christian camp on an island in the Dnipro river. It is a 5 day camp hosted by some missionaries in the town of Rzhyshchiv which is about 10 miles away from us. This is the third year they've been doing it and it has been a great thing for the youth. The youth group decided that the camp would be a good thing to invite their friends to, so out of about 30 people that are going to the camp from Kagarlyk 17 don't come to church. We are praying that at the camp they see more than just a bunch of Christians having fun - that they see Jesus alive in each person.

In a couple days we are going to take a trip up to Chernigov to visit the missionaries up there. While there I hope to spend some time with Jake Knotts talking about book publishing and possibilities for producing short Christian videos for TV.

June update from Leah and Belazs

Our Family
We have had a great time this month as it is summer and that means lots of hiking, free concerts in the city, bar-b-ques, and swimming! As a family, we were definitely made for the outdoors and God has blessed us beyond measure with the city He has called us to. We love it here! Ellie is seriously on the move now…crawling everywhere, getting into everything, she is even standing up on things and taking steps! She loves to eat and gets very upset if someone is eating food in front of her and won’t share. Swimming is by far her favorite activity, in the lake or at the pool, she was definitely made for the water.

Praise the Lord and thank you for your prayers for Balázs’ sister and sister in law. They are both past the first half of their pregnancies and both babies are doing well. Both girls are off of bed rest but are still not allowed to work. The Lord is faithful indeed. Please continue to pray for them and the babies. Also, we will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary at the end of this month.

Church
The Lord is continuously showing us and defining for us the new roles we are in…it is good and
challenging at the same time. We are almost daily realizing how absolutely unable we are to do this ministry but we are at the same time encouraged that God is able and He gives us strength, wisdom and help as we need. Please pray for us to cling to Him for all we need each day.

This past month has been defined by nearly daily meeting with different people from the college group or the church. It is cool to see how God is using these times of discipleship to minister to the individual needs and questions of our body. Please pray that we would have discernment, wisdom, and offer the Word as the answer for all to stand upon and hold to.

The college group is doing well, even though many have left for the summer, many remain and we are continuing to study David’s life, now in 2 Samuel. During the final exam period we had the students over for a “study break” with brownie sundaes and we watched End of the Spear, the movie about the Indian tribe in Ecuador where 5 missionaries were killed some years ago. It was a great film and a great night.

Please pray for the students who have gone home for the summer, most to unbelieving families, that they would be remain close to the Lord and shine His love to their families and friends at home.

Outreach
Balázs is weekly ministering in a youth prison and teaching the Word to the boys there. He is having a great time but is very burdened for these boys, as apart from placing their trust in Jesus their lives truly have no hope. Please pray for these boys salvation, their futures and for Balázs as he needs wisdom and love to reach these youth. Also, please pray for the church to be involved with the boys through prayer.

Other
We attended the Eastern European Mission’s conference this past week and were beyond blessed by our time there. The teachings were great, with the theme of “We would see Jesus.” Personally, we were reminded of the centrality of love to the gospel and to our lives as believers. We were challenged to abide in Jesus as many of the speakers referred to John 15:5 where Jesus reminds us that without Him we can do nothing. The fellowship with friends from many Eastern European countries was also a great joy for us. Overall, we left feeling refreshed and encouraged.

Upcoming month
This month is the Southern Hungary conference for all of the Calvary Chapels in Southern Hungary. Balázs is responsible for coordinating all of the worship. Please pray for him to have wisdom and to be able to organize this before next week. Balázs was asked to speak at Hungary’s university ministry’s (similar to Campus Crusade) summer conference. Please pray that the Lord would give him a clear message to share.

Our Family

The Lord continues to pour out His love on us as we daily experience His gentleness as He guides us through many changes. Ellie is doing great! She is 6 months now and is ready to be on the move! She rolls everywhere and is beginning to crawl. She takes a lot more watching now and continues to bring a tremendous amount of joy to us daily. We ask for your prayers as we are daily humbled by the responsibility God has entrusted us with in this little girl. Please pray for us to have wisdom with each new stage that comes. We had a couple of friends from Germany as well as a family of 5 staying with us this month, and were encouraged by their fellowship. We traveled to Budapest to share with the church there about what God is doing in Pécs as were very blessed by their reception and love for us. We also spent time with friends and family while there and enjoyed our time greatly.

Please pray for both Balazs’ sister and sister-in-law as they are both in the hospital with high-risk pregnancies. They are both in the second trimester and have both been trying to conceive for many years. Please pray the Lord would protect these babies and keep both girls healthy.

Church
Praise the Lord for hearing your prayers! The Lord has allowed us to get another room for toddler/baby care and we have began that ministry this past month. The mother’s have been more than blessed as they are able to hear the teachings now, some for the first time in almost 3 years!! The Lord has also stirred up many in the church to serve in this ministry as well as teachers for the older children…it is amazing to see the Lord move people in response to His desires. Also, we have been seeking a new place to have the church as we have need for a different location. The Lord has now closed the door where we are currently meeting to push us to really pursue this. Of course, as He closes one door He opens an even better one.

We are currently working out a contract to be able to use a kindergarten to have the church in. It is downtown, has the space and rooms we need and will even allow us to have our monthly fellowship potlucks there. We are very excited but please pray for the contract to be worked out as well as for the church in general as these are a lot of changes all at one time.

We are weekly amazed at how the college group continues to grow and mature. The students are hungry for the Word and for living it out in their lives. They come with questions and challenge us as they seek to know how to submit their lives wholly to being obedient to Christ. There are many conferences this summer that we are sending students to, Please pray the Lord would use these conferences to draw the students closer to Himself. Please pray for Balázs and Leah as they individually disciple these students to be full of wisdom and love. Pray for Balázs as he teaches this group and encourages the students to be men and women after God’s own heart. in these areas.

We have a couple of teenage boys who do not really have any covering in the church, they are too old for the kid’s ministry and a bit too young for the adult services. Praise God! One of the guys in the church has a desire to meet with these guys and pour in to their lives. Please pray for him to have time to meet with them and wisdom and direction for these times.

Outreach
We received another outreach team from the bible college this month and had a great time preparing for a women’s day. We had chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels (a first for these Hungarian women!), we made cards and crafts, one of the women shared and we had a great time of fellowship. The men watched the kids during this time and really, we were all very blessed by the day! As a result, we have felt led to have a women’s fellowship every 6 weeks, as many of the women are mother’s and are isolated from fellowship with other believing women. Please pray as Leah heads up this and other women’s ministry events for her to have wisdom and be sensitive to where the Lord want to take these times.

Balázs continues ministering at the prison, it is a challenge every week as he meets with these boys to communicate the Word and principles of life that they have never learned. Please pray for these boys salvation, their futures and for Balázs as he needs wisdom and love to reach these youth. Also, please pray for the church to be involved with the boys through prayer.

Other
A young couple in our church is getting married at the end of the month and has asked Balázs to play the music for the wedding. Please pray that he would have time to practice and for wisdom for writing and learning new songs. Please pray for Balázs and the elders as they deal with some issues due to the transition as well as some issues regarding the worship leader. They need guidance from the Lord with how to handle these things. Balázs will be finishing at the Catholic school next week for the summer break. Please pray for him to remain faithful until the end and to have a fresh heart for this next school year. Leah continues to have a weekly Hungarian lesson but struggles to study during the week. Please pray for her to be disciplined in this and make it a priority.

Upcoming month
We are going to be attending a mission’s/leaders conference this month and will be taking a couple leaders from our church as well. Please pray for this to be a refreshing time and a time for the Lord to encourage us with fresh hearts to be able to pour into the church when we return.

Hi everyone!

I'll just jump right in and try to bring you up to date with everything that has been going on.

In the end of May we went to a conference for all the Calvary Chapels in Ukraine. The conference is always a good time to see people that we don't get to see very often and just hang out and fellowship. It was good for our church to go and relax, fellowship, and seek God. One young lady that just started coming to our church decided at the conference that she was going to follow God and she went and got baptized during the baptism time.

Last Thursday Liese and I made another trip to Priluki. This trip we were able to see some old friends that we hadn't seen in quite a while. It is good to keep in touch with the church there. Our next trip to Priluki will probably be in July for a purity conference that some of the missionaries in Chernigov are putting on and the Priluki church is hosting. We want to bring a bunch of our youth to it so we'll try to fill up our car and our church van and drive out for a day.

Last week I met with our summer ministry team about what our summer will look like. We feel this year that it is a time to move away from big organized events that are meant to draw people to the church and move toward doing things on a personal level in order to build friendships with people and shine the light of Christ into our city. With that in mind we want to spend time hanging out at the popular hang outs, playing volleyball and soccer, playing music on the street in the evenings, and perhaps starting a home bible study with the goal of having a place to invite people to hang out and study God's word together. Some of the team want to go visit the elderly in the city and either help them in their yards or just sit and talk with them and love them.

So we are not planning any large scale youth activities, vacation bible schools, or anything like that. We will organize a soccer tournament or two but that is about all. This year is not the end of those type of ministries it is just a pause while we do the things that the church should be doing - that is being out in the city and involved in peoples' lives.

Wayne and his family flew to Australia today. They will be gone for two months and during that time I will be pastoring. Please pray for me that God would give me wisdom to lead this church and strength as it looks like there will be a lot to do this summer even though we are not planning any big events.

Liese will be in charge of the worship ministry while Olya is gone. It is a whole different situation than two and a half years ago when we first came. We now have 9 people involved in worship ministry and 3 of them are leaders. So Liese will mainly just be organizing and filling in for people which in and of itself is an answer to our prayers. Please pray for her and please continue to pray for the church here that it would grow closer to Jesus, deeper in its relationship with Jesus, and closer as a body of believers.

Hi everyone!

Sorry it's been a while since the last update. I've been updating our blog regularly and I've forgotten to send out e-mail updates.

So here is what has been going on here in Kagy and what we are planning.

Liese and I are still leading worship, I play guitar once a month or so and Liese leads once a month and sings every other week. In a few weeks pastor Wayne and Olya are going to Australia for two months and while they are gone Liese will be leading the worship ministry.

I'm still preaching every other Sunday and right now we are going through the gospel of Luke. I've also been teaching a series of bible studies about the church on Sunday nights. Last fall we started meeting every other Sunday night for fellowship and to talk about the church's vision. After a few months we thought it would be good to have a more in-depth study of what a church is and so I've been teaching those. Please pray for me as Wayne is in Australia this summer because I'll be teaching a lot. Also pray for my Russian - it seems I've been taking steps backward for a couple months now and I'm going to try to start taking lessons again. Oh, and I'm going to start a bible study this summer with a couple young men in the church to study the foundations of our faith.

We (those in our church who want to be part of our summer ministry team) have started to plan what outreaches we will do this summer. It seems like this year we have less time, less people, and less money than in other years so we are praying about how to best focus what we have. Last year's outreaches were really great and everyone who was involved has seen that the fruit that has remained from those events has been in the friendships that were built. So this year we are praying about how to encourage more relationship building and how we can go out to people instead of just inviting them to come to us. We are praying about how to combine the good things that we've done in the past with more personal outreach and it looks like we may do a lot less this year in terms of events but try to be more active in getting to know people as we play soccer, hang out at the popular hangouts, do vacation bible schools, and invite people to youth group and church. Please keep us in prayer that God would lead us.

Since getting our car we've been able to make a trip to Priluki to visit the church there. It was great to see everyone and I got to teach at their Thursday night service. We hope to go out to Priluki about once a month if we can swing it. We have also been up to visit our missionary friends in Chernigov.

This weekend is a conference for all the Calvary Chapels in Ukraine. It is always a good time to see people from other churches that we don't get to see very often and everyone is always encouraged by the fellowship.

a new book

Our third book God is the Gospel by John Piper is going to print this Monday. We had some trouble with our first translation and had to completely retranslate the book from scratch, which was a big disappointment. However, I am really pleased with the new translation and very excited about getting the book in hand.

In two weeks there will be a large international Christian book fair in Kiev that we will be taking part in. We are hoping to get the new book out and are thinking now about some marketing methods.

We also decided to print 500 out of 5000 in hard back. Our mission is to print books that are affordable and available and hard back bindings push the price of the book up a lot so we hadn't considered printing hard back. But after seeing how many of our books were wanted by Seminaries and libraries, we realized that there is a need for hard bindings and we are hoping to meet that need with one tenth of our print run. This of course increased the cost of each book by 3.5 grieven (70 cents) which is going to cost us a bit more, but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

We would appreciate your prayers that the book would be ready by the 23rd, the first day of the festival.

Chris Zurbach's May update from Ukraine

Greetings!!!
I really was hoping to get this out a bit earlier but I have a good reason for being delayed. We’ve had many guests this past month and a few hours ago I just sent off the last crew. I’ll get to that
towards the end but before that I just want to catch you all up on what has been going on here this past month. I ask that you pray for our church as many of the young people have been going through a really hard time. One gal in our church just lost her Dad as he pretty much
died from alcoholism and got sick suddenly and died. It has been a hard time for her so I ask that you would pray for Marina as she is home most of the time taking care of her Grandma who just had a stroke and now needs 24 hour care. Yesterday we were also informed that a very close friend to everybody in the church just lost her mom. We all knew her mom as she came to church sometimes. It was very unexpected and related to kidney stones. All to say it is a difficult time for many and it would be great if you could be praying forthe young believers here that they would continue to grow in trusting God in all things.

May means holidays here in Ukraine. Last week we celebrated May Day which is a big holiday here and then yesterday was Victory Day. Everything kind of shuts down in Ukraine when there are holidays so it was a bit complicated getting things done but the flip side is that everybody had some days off and we were able to get away as a church and spend the night at a camp in the forest 20 minutes outside of Chernihiv. It was a lot of fun to get together a build a bon-fire that would set California a flame in 2 seconds. No rules here means - Big Big Camp Fires made up of entire trees that the guys cut down. Not too many environmentalist in this
part of the world. Anyways it was a great time for us to be together and eat borsch.

Visitors
I was really blessed to be visited by 3 ladies from California whom I’ve known for a long time. Sherry Stupar, Karen Stump, and Jenny Schlenker came out to visit to just hang out, see what is happening here in Ukraine, and bring me lots of presents. The present part was pretty overwhelming as I didn’t expect the Women’s Group at my church to come through with Costco size amounts of everything. I think I have 8 pounds of Craisins and enough heavy duty aluminum foil to make my own space station. It was a huge blessing to share my life here with them and for them to meet the people and see what we get to do. We laughed a lot and ate a lot.

They were bearers of huge blessings for Reenie and myself. Because of some generous people that sent over money we are now able to buy a new djembe for the church and some more needed sound equipment. We were also able to visit Priluki to goto a church service and visit Luba and her grandson, Anton (check picture above). Luba was so thrilled to have guests and
just fellowship as she pretty much does not leave the house anymore having become completely blind because of the brain tumor. We also visited Halavin (Children’s Mental hospital), the internaught, our Kid’s Club, and the school where Tracy and I teach English to show the ladies some of the different ministries we’ve involved in and give them a chance to meet people. God really blessed our time with the teachers in the local school as we talked about life, God, and Ukraine.

Up and Coming Events
Please be praying as we have many events in these next couple weeks. We will be traveling down to the National Conference for Calvary Chapels in Kiev then heading over again to Priluki for a wedding of two young people in our church. We also will be finalizing plans for beginning our summer Kids’ Outreaches so please be praying that will be allowed to meet in one of the local parks. We also are planning a conference for singles at the end of July. It will be for all the churches in our region but we will be having it in Priluki since they are centrally located and have the biggest building. Please pray for wisdom as I plan that with Conor and Reenie.

I am also getting ready to go to America for a few weeks to go to a family wedding. I am really excited that my parents bought me a ticket to come back for the wedding as I was not planning on going back till next November/December to visit and touch base with churches. I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I was last back there. I will only be there for a short time so I will most likely not see a lot of people but I am excited to be with my family at my cousins wedding in Tennessee. I think of so many of you often and do pray that God is blessing you and I hope you know how thankful I am for your prayers and support.

Our Family
The Lord is good to us! We are so blessed to have each other and to have our little girl; each of these relationships make us more fully understand our relationships with and the character of God. Ellie is so much fun to watch as she explores the world (mostly with her mouth!) She, like her mom and dad, loves to be outside and is having a great time now that it is spring. As a family we have had some great hiking adventures as we are so blessed to live in the part of the country where there are hills and trees. We have also enjoyed the outdoors with some of the families in the church- playing soccer in back yards and taking the kids to a farm near us. We are really happy that we have such great friends in the church body.

Church
We had our annual sunrise service for Easter on a mountain top over looking the city. It was cold but very fun to meet together to worship the resurrection of Jesus. We went to one of the families in the church and had a traditional Hungarian Easter food, it was very tasty.

On April 15th, the head of Calvary Chapel Reaching Europe came to Pécs to hand the church over to Balázs. He encouraged the church through Moses and Joshua’s lives about how to respond to this change and he challenged Balázs in his new role. After church, we had a big Mexican food celebration (the day before several of us from the church got together to hand-make 120 tortillas!), it was a great afternoon.

The college group continues to be a great joy and challenge to us. The group is made up of people from a very diverse church background but everyone comes together for the single purpose of knowing God, it is amazing. The group is weekly bringing new people, roommates, classmates, workmates, and we are encouraged by their excitement. Please pray for Balázs and Leah as they individually disciple these students to be full of wisdom and love. Pray for Balázs as he teaches this group and encourages the students to be men and women after God’s own heart. As we have said before, we really see a need to have another building to meet in as the toddlers and babies have no where to be during service causing the parents to have to watch them in the halls and miss the studies every week. We are planning on meeting with the landlord of our current location to ask if we can have a third room each week. Please pray for them to agree to this and for a new contract to be signed.

We met with the girl who is currently serving as the children’s ministry teacher and addressed the needs in the children’s ministry. She and her fiancé will continue to lead the ministry but they need more helpers to come alongside of them to teach the kids. Also, once we have a third room, we would like to be able to offer child care to the parents during service. Please pray that the Lord would raise up people to serve in these areas.

Outreach
Balázs continues ministering at the prison, he has been burdened for these youth not just now but especially once they are released. Please pray for these boys salvation, and for Balázs as he tries to love them and show them who Christ is for them. Also, please pray for Balázs as he seeks to build relationships with the pastors of other churches so that after-care may be provided to these teens as a unified effort in the city. Balázs was asked to share at one of the university’s Christian clubs. After he shared his testimony, he stayed for almost two hours answering their questions about our lives and faith in the Lord. Some of the students expressed interest in wanting to come to college group for teachings, please pray that they would be encouraged by the Word to follow Christ fully.

Balázs was able to visit a gentleman who used to come to the church but is now in an old folk’s home. He was able to encourage the man and he asked for us to come and read the bible to him whenever we could. Please pray for this man to remain strong in the Lord and for some in the church to have a burden to minister in that place. Leah was able to continue ministering to a woman who is struggling in her walk with the Lord and who is afraid to come to church. Please pray for Viktoria to love Jesus and welcome the body He provides.

Other
Praise the Lord for the elders in the church who are completely behind and desiring to labor with Balázs in leading the church. Please pray for wisdom as they define roles in the leadership and for these men as they seek the Lord for the direction the church should go in. Balázs continues to be challenged as he teaches at the Catholic school weekly. He has a great time but desires to remain faithful in preparation for this time each week. Please pray for his faithfulness. God has been faithful to provide a teacher who can meet weekly with Leah for Hungarian lessons. Please pray that this time would be fruitful, for the Holy Spirit to enable Leah to learn quickly, and for her to be faithful to study and use what she learns.

Upcoming month
We have another team coming from the bible college this weekend. Please pray that they would encourage the church and that the women would be blessed and fed during our girl’s day. There is a youth conference this month that we are sending a couple of our youth to, please pray for them to be challenged in their walks and encouraged by the teachings.

Happy Belated Easter!

We have just finished a very busy week of pre- Easter Sunday activities and are really thankful to the Lord for how much He blessed us in all that we did. First of all I hope you enjoy the pictures that are scattered about that include a couple of this weeks activities of our Easter service, Easter sunrise gathering at the park at the edge of the city, “Krepost” Kids Club, and egg decorating.

“Miracle Maker” film showing

We were able this past week to show the film, “Miracle Maker” in an elderly living center, a school, the children’s mental hospital, local internaught, and the museum where we have our Sunday service. I was so excited to be able to go to the Elderly living facility where there are about 650 residents. It is an enormous territory that is very reminiscent of Soviet times as the buildings are large gray brick structures and it is decorated just as it had been 30 years ago. We were pleased to see that it was clean and people seemed to be well taken care of. About 80 people came to watch the film and we were able to talk with them and share about how much Jesus loves them.

Some of them were very touched by the film as I think seeing what Christ did, even in clay-mation, is so powerful. Some of the women came up after with tears and said, “thank you”, even though it was hard for many of them to speak. There are also about 20 residents who
are physically/mentally challenged as there is no facility in the Chernihiv State to care for them. After 18 years old this is where they are sent. We are praying that God would open more doors for us to be able to help out there.

Besides showing the film in all those different places we also prepared an Easter puppet show to perform at “Krepost” and the internaught. Two girls in our church, Oksana and Mira, wrote a little scenario and did a great job performing it for the kids.

Easter Sunday
As Chernihiv Church tradition goes we met at the “stronghold” of the city at sunrise to celebrate Easter, drink tea, and eat special “Pasxu” (Easter) bread that people only bake and eat on Easter. There were many people out eating “Pasxu”, eggs, and sausages at 6:00am as
many Ukrainians gather outside the churches there to eat the food they just had blessed by the Orthodox priests.

Our service was later in the day and we were so excited to see neighbors and family of people in our church come. We are now meeting in the larger hall of the museum which is much nicer as it is much lighter than in the movie hall we were in. The lady that works there is now able to see the service from where she sits on the second floor and she was so excited to hear the music and the sermon. She shared with us how amazed she is to see young people that love God and one another. We also had two other women in their 60’s who came and loved hearing the Bible read and taught. We so want older people to be a part of the church as we know that is God’s desire for there to be older and younger people.

Hope you enjoyed hearing about Easter here. We have much to do this coming month as many guests are coming and we are helping house 7 refugees from India as the police have asked for our help in that. Please take note of my new email at the top.

Stowe's Update for March

Hey everyone, I just updated our blog with pictures and info about our recent retreat for Carnaval. It was a great weekend! Our church had a great time together and really deepened some relationships with each other. It was a blessing. Please pray for more maturity, humility, and intimacy with Jesus for our church, especially for our young people.

March update from Balázs and Leah

Our Family

This month has been a very difficult month for us but we can sit back as we reflect with joy and peace knowing that our God is a good Father, He is gracious and so faithful and blesses our lives in more ways than we can number. The delay in the newsletter and lack of photos is due to our computer dying this month. Please pray that somehow we can retrieve all of the data from the hard drive as there was many very important things including all of Ellie’s baby pictures. Please also pray that the Lord would provide a new computer as is it a great need at this time.

Praise God! We were able to get the paperwork we needed and the American Embassy granted Ellie her citizenship. She now has dual Hungarian-American citizenship. We visited Balázs’ mom and step-father this month and had a great time seeing them with her as she is the first grandchild. She is of course continuing to amaze us each day as we realize what a gift she is. One of Balázs’ brothers and sister-in-law is pregnant after trying unsuccessfully for years! Please pray that the Lord would protect her womb and the baby as she has lost three previous pregnancies.

Church

On April 15^th, the head of Calvary Chapel Reaching Europe as well as the regional overseeing pastor will be coming to Pécs to pray for us as Balázs will be taking over the church that day. Please continue to pray for us as we walk on this new path. Also please pray for the pastor and his wife as they pack and prepare for their next steps. The church has had some great times of fellowship this month at our regular potluck and at several other times of meeting.

The Lord is continuing to build friendships and offer healing to those who have been wounded before. Tracy, Leah’s former roommate in Ukraine came to visit and shared with the ladies one afternoon. All of the women were encouraged by her sharing with them and enjoyed the time together.

The college group continues to be a huge joy for us as we see these students desiring to be in fellowship and to study the Word together. Please pray for Balázs and Leah as they individually disciple these students to be ull of wisdom and love. Pray for Balázs as he teaches this group.

We really see a need to have another building to meet in as the toddlers and babies have no where to be during service causing the parents to have to watch them in the halls and miss the studies every week. Please pray for God to provide a place for us to use for church that meets the needs of the body. We also would like to see the church burdened with hearts to pray both individually and corporately at our weekly prayer meetings. Please pray that God would move hearts to pray for each other and beyond.

Outreach

This month Balázs continued ministering at the prison. He is weekly burdened by the depravity of the youth there as well as their seemingly hopeless situations. Please pray for these boys to find hope in our Savior and for Balázs as he tries to show them the way to Him. We were asked to share our testimonies at a coffee shop this month in a sort of forum type setting. We were blessed to see people so attentive and stay after to talk with us. The night was made into a DVD which is now being distributed in Hungary for free! Please pray that God would use this for His glory.

We had an outreach team come from the bible college in Vajta this past weekend and were very blessed to have five Hungarians and two Americans stay with our church body. The team helped in practical ministry as well as building up and encouraging our church as we spent a great deal of time together. What a true blessing the greater body of Christ is!

Other

Balázs continues to lead worship a couple of nights a week and is working with other musicians to raise them up to lead as well. Please pray that God would stir up these people as well as the church as a whole in worship and praise. We and the elders in the church have a vision for pouring our lives into the lives of those in our church, discipling them and allowing them to then disciple others. Please pray for wisdom, direction, and most importantly the Holy Spirit to fill us as we see to do this.

Balázs continues to be challenged as he teaches at the Catholic school weekly. He has a great time but desires to remain faithful in preparation for this time each week. Please pray for his faithfulness. God has been faithful to provide a teacher who can meet weekly with Leah for Hungarian lessons. Please pray that this time would be fruitful, for the Holy Spirit to enable Leah to learn quickly, and for her to be faithful to study and use what she learns.

Hello everyone!

We've been in Kagarlyk for a little more than a month now and are back into the swing of things. We've been leading worship together which has been nice. I've been teaching every other Sunday which has been a little rough after being out of practice speaking Russian.

After we got back from America we started looking for a car to buy and finally a couple weeks ago we found one. In what seemed like a whirlwind. We bought it and got all the papers and documents done in about a week. That alone is a small miracle but the fact that we have a car now is a huge miracle. God answered our prayers that we had been praying for about a year now because we would like to be more mobile and be able to visit the churches in Priluki, Nezhyn, Chernigov, and others more often. Next week is Easter and this year it falls on the same day as the West celebrates it - April 8th. Easter in Ukraine is the one time of year when almost everyone is in some way or other thinking about Jesus Christ. They greet each other all week after Easter with "Christ is risen - Truly He is risen". Our prayer is always that God would use this time to turn people's hearts to Him and that they would understand the meaning of their Easter greeting. Please join us in prayer for the lost in Ukraine this Easter.

Last year we tried to print up an Easter letter and then mail it to every house in Kagarlyk. The first part went well, but the mailing part fell victim to the soviet work ethic; therefore not very many people actually received the letters. So this year we decided to write a small article about Easter and its meaning (the death and resurrection of Christ so that we could be forgiven of our sins and receive eternal life) and buy an ad space in the local paper for it. I've been going around to the other churches in Kagarlyk asking them if they would like to be mentioned at the end of the article as a place where people can come and learn more about Jesus. So far all of them have said yes. Our prayer for this article is that people would read it and be drawn by the Holy Spirit to come to church and find out more about the life Jesus offers, and that they would see the believers of the city united behind the resurrection of our Lord and not divided over small doctrinal differences. Again, please join us in prayer for these things.

Soon we will begin to plan our summer outreaches so please pray that God would lead us as we plan and that this summer more people would know the love of their Creator. Please also keep us in your prayers that God would give us wisdom and strength as we serve, that He would protect us and guide us, and that He would use us to further His kingdom here in Ukraine.

Greetings

Alright – Wow this month really flew by. Thank you so much for praying for me as we did a lot of traveling this past month to various churches. God really blessed our times in the small town of Rjischiv where Reenie and I were able to go down and spend time with the ladies at their monthly gathering. It was really encouraging to see what God is doing in the ministry there and be able to share with them about being content, as that was the topic assigned to me by Cheryl, one of the missionaries down there.

So that was fun, and then we were off to Priluki later in the week to visit the church down there. We were there at the mid-week service and brought down a van-load of people where we led worship and then Jake taught from Isaiah 55. It was such a blessing to take people from our church here down there to fellowship with the church and just have fun. They are such a hospitable church and so loving. So I actually was down there again this past weekend to spend time with all the young pregnant first-time mom’s. I am so thankful that we are close enough where I am able to hop on some public transport and be there in 3 hours.

Anyways – Please continue praying for our young gals up here as we continue to meet every Friday this month to discuss various topics and see what the Bible says about these issues. It has been a lot of fun and challenging. One of the teachers came from the school that we visit and really enjoyed it. We also celebrated the 8th of March which is International Women’s Day. It is probably the second biggest holiday here in Ukraine, second only to New Year’s. The guys rented a Russian “Banya” for us, also know as a sauna (but different then your perception of a sauna), and we spent the morning sweating in 130 degree Celsius heat then jumping into cold water.

Do it about 5 times and woo…you feel like a new person. It was quite the experience for me but a lot of fun. Later we gathered at Jake and Anya’s to hang out.

Please pray as we continue going to one of the schools to teach English and share Bible stories, that the kids would come to know the Lord and have fun. They freak out every week when we come so I’m pretty positive they’re having fun. We have permission to show, “Miracle Maker” the week before Easter so please pray that that would go through without any hindrances. We will also be showing that film in the children’s mental hospital, internaught’s, and in a theatre. So you can pray for that.

“Krepost” Kid’s Club – We’re planning a special “Krepost” Kid’s Club the day before Easter so we’re praying that many parents will come and have a good time with their kids and see God’s love through what we do at “Krepost”. Pray that we would plan and prepare well for that and that God would give us wisdom as we plan for summer.

We are also looking to start reaching out to college kids that live in the dorms here through multi-media. There are a few college students in the church that really want to start something so pray that God would provide in renting a space for that.

Our Family
Ellie continues to be a great source of joy for us as we watch her grow more and more beautiful each day. She is a big girl for sure! She weighs over 14 pounds already. Smiling and laughing take up most of her time and she loves to chew on her hands (she tries to get the whole thing in there). Please pray for us to have wisdom with balancing our marriage and family and for guidance as parents.

Our trip to Budapest was very fun as we shared Ellie with Great Grandparents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles who had never seen her. We also spent time with friends and took care of business. Ellie was not granted American citizenship as we could not prove the time Leah spent in America but are waiting for some documents and will submit those. Please pray for the paperwork to come and for the embassy to accept the documents and provide her citizenship. We were also able to share Ellie with some of the doctors and nurses who told Balázs he would not be able to have children. They rejoiced in what a miracle God has performed. It was a great encouragement to these people who see death daily that God is so good and loving towards His children. We are still awaiting the blood and CT results from Balázs cancer check but the doctor feels everything continues to be completely healthy after 3 years…Praise the Lord!

Ministry
The Lord certainly does work in mysterious ways! A little over 9 months ago we finished bible college, moved to Pécs, and began to minister alongside the pastor and his wife. This past month, the Lord has called them on to pastor at the bible college and from there their hearts are to begin a work in Bosnia. The pastor asked Balázs to accept the pastorate of the church beginning in May. We sought the Lord and felt that this was His hand moving us to accept and our decision was confirmed by the church elders who agreed this was the Lord moving. The pastor informed the church and everyone was very supportive of us. Please pray for us as we embark on this new road, for the church as we transition, and for the pastor and his wife as they close doors here and move on.

We held the evangelism concert at the coffee shop and were amazed once again at the Lord’s faithfulness. The song writing and rehearsals went well for the band but the day of the concert two of the guys were sick and yet the Lord gave them strength to play and the concert was great. Leah shared the gospel and her testimony and the coffee shop was filled twice surprising even the owner. The church body invited people they would not normally invite to church and we were blessed to see them step in faith. We would like to continue these events in the coming months. Please pray for the church body to lead these events in the future and for continued evangelism opportunities within the city.

Balázs began to minister at the prison this month and was very blessed to find out that the prison will allow him to be both an individual and a group counselor. His first sessions went well as he began to form relationships with the inmates and staff. Please pray for wisdom and Spirit-filled teaching, for the salvation of the adults and kids he comes in contact with, and for relationships to grow.

Prayer has been on our hearts a lot this month and the Lord is moving in this area also. Balázs was able to attend a prayer meeting at the University campus to pray for the unsaved students in the city. These prayer meetings will continue weekly. On March 14th there will be a city wide prayer meeting with all of the Christian churches in the city to unite and pray for the lost and hurting in this city. Please pray for unity among the leaders, for one heart and for love to transcend at these meetings.

We continue to see the college students growing as we study 1 Samuel and are weekly challenged to spur the students to follow Christ with complete abandon. During the prayer times and individual discipleship, we are encountering more and more difficult concerns from the students. Please pray that we would have wisdom as we meet with these students, and for the Holy Spirit to guide us as we counsel them and for Balázs as he teaches.

We are becoming increasingly aware of the need for the church to have a permanent facility for church services and mid-week activities. Please pray for the Lord to lead us to the right place and for financial provision.

Also, as the Lord is directing us to be foster parents, we need to purchase a home in order to have foster kids. Through some crazy circumstances and relationships, the Lord lead us to a village outside of Pécs where housing is quite cheap and the mayor is very supportive and helpful. Please pray for guidance, timing, and provision from the Lord and help as we seek housing loans and government resources. This next month, we will be hosting an outreach team from the Bible college for the weekend. We are thinking of having some nights with just the guys and girls for fellowship and encouragement but we are unsure at this point. Please pray for wisdom with how to best utilize this team as well as for the practical details like housing, etc. Also next month there is an evangelism conference hosted by the Baptist church that we will be a part of. Please pray for our relationships with this church.

Greetings!!!

Did the ground hog see his shadow or not? I missed catching that bit of information on the news and am wondering how long winter is going to last because it finally arrived to Ukraine and the word on the Babuska corner is that it’s going to be a long one… virtually no spring. Hoping that they’re wrong but experience proves that they are probably not.

Well there is a lot happening here in Chernihiv as we prepared this past month to move our Sunday services to a museum located not far from our church building. We held our first Sunday service there this past Sunday and it went really well as our church body was really excited to take this step forward in renting a larger space. Along with having more space for adults we are able to also have a Sunday School as there is a large hall that the museum said we could use for children’s ministry. We are very excited to be able to have a place for kids to be a part of the church on Sunday’s. Please pray for us as we begin developing a Sunday School and raising up teachers to teach the kids. Pray that the kids from Krepost kids club would come with their families to church as parents have expressed interest in coming.

Kids Club – God is truly blessing our kids club as we have a group of about 15 kids that come on a continual basis. It is amazing to see them beginning to understand more about the love of God. Please pray for our group that serves there that God would continue to unite us and give us wisdom as we begin preparing for summer and all the different festivals/camps that we want to do.

School Outreach - We truly have an amazing open door at one of the local schools here as we teach English there every week through Bible lessons. We are seeking to get permission to show the movie from a few years back, “Miracle Maker”. We want to show it in Ukrainian the week before Easter at the school. We also continue to meet with the teachers and some advanced English students helping prepare them for the English Olympics. Woohoo

Church Prayer Needs – We are planning on meeting together with the gals in the church every Friday in the month of March to get together and do some topical Bible Studies regarding issues that they deal with everyday. The guys will be meeting together simultaneously too. One interesting fact about Chernihiv is that it is known as the city with the most women. In the 70’s it is said that women outnumbered men 10:1. Now the figure is about 6:1. Our church demographically represents the city as we pretty much have a church of young women. All to say the girls are very excited to get together and discuss women’s issues. Please pray that God would give us wisdom in planning and preparing.

Thank you again for praying for this ministry here. I ask that you would also pray for me as I will be going to another city, Rjischiv, at the end of the month to do a Bible Study for their women’s group. Please pray that I would be able to prepare well in Ukrainian and speak clearly. I’ll also be taking a group of gals to go down and do worship in Priluki which will be fun. So please pray for safe travels and encouraging times with the other churches.

Our Family
This month we experienced the peaks of amazing joy as parents as well as the valleys of utter frustration as we learn how to love and care for our little girl. She continues to do well, gaining lots of weight, loving to eat, smile and roll over. She loves to hear Balázs play the mandolin and definitely prefers that to the guitar or banjo. We are learning the new balance of marriage and parenting and are enjoying seeing how God enables us to continue to put our marriage as a priority. It certainly is not as easy as before Ellie was born. Please pray for us to have wisdom with balancing our marriage and family and for guidance as parents.

The weather here has finally decided to act like winter after weeks of warmth we are seeing snow and cold. It is still fun for a California girl like Leah to see snow falling and covering everything. Please pray as we travel to Budapest in February for some rest and time with family & friends as well as having Balázs’ cancer check and Ellie’s citizenship appointment at the American embassy.

Ministry
The Lord has worked in astounding ways this month bringing together things that have been in prayer for this church for the past seven years. We stand in awe of how He works in His timing to accomplish what He wills.

The Lord opened a radical door this month as we have been praying for evangelism opportunities for both the church and the college group. We met with a gypsy man who is a fellow believer that just opened the first Christian coffee shop in the city. He was open to allowing us full use of his coffee shop for any evangelical event or really anything the Lord leads us in. We are very excited to see the ways the Lord will use this both in the church body and to reach the community. Our first event will be a concert with Balázs and three other guys from the church on the 24th of February. Please pray for the church to be a part of the evangelism through sharing during the evening and passing out fliers ahead of time to invite the community. Please pray for Balázs as he writes music for the concert and for he and the other band members as they practice. Also, please pray for our relationship with the owner and for the future opportunities here.

The college group had some great times of fellowship and growth this month as we continued through 1 Samuel. The Lord continues to be faithful with His Word as Balázs teaches and is challenging the group in their personal walks with Him. We had a fellowship dinner before one of the studies and had a great time eating and just hanging out with each other. Please pray that more students would come to the prayer meetings as we feel it is critical to spend time in prayer before taking these students out who are eager to evangelize.

Balázs was able to teach for three weeks this month as the pastor was away. He was challenged as there were many difficult topics in the passages he taught but was amazed at the Lord’s grace in making clear His message for the church. Every 3rd Thursday home group Balázs leads the group in a night of prayer and worship. This last time was very special as the Lord led His church closer to Himself. Please pray for this next Thursday as we seek the Holy Spirit as a group. Please also pray for Balázs as he continues to lead the worship twice a week as well as for him as he teaches at the Catholic school.

Please pray for him to be enabled as he teaches guitar lessons weekly. Leah was able to meet with some of the girls this month for discipleship. She is encouraged as the girls are more and more honest but challenged as she is ever aware of her not being able to help but needing the Lord to give wisdom for how to handle the various things that come up. Please pray for her to have wisdom in dealing with these women and for them to grow in Jesus and be more aware of His love and grace for them.

Also, please pray for Leah to resume studying and to be diligent in learning the language.

Greetings and Happy New Year!!

Sorry for the delayed letter but it has been very busy as we just finished our holiday season. I want to thank you guys so much for praying for all of our Christmas and New Year’s events. God truly answered our prayers and blessed everything. As you might remember Ukrainian Christmas was just celebrated this past weekend on the 6th and 7th of January. We hosted our first “Krepost”

kids club Christmas gathering. We invited the kids to bring their parents and we were so excited them actually come. We had been practicing Christmas songs with the kids prior to the party and it was so much fun to see them get up and sing for their parents. The parents really enjoyed themselves and had a great time watching our Christmas skit, eating cookies, and doing crafts with their kids.

The Christmas skit that one of the gals, Mira, in the church wrote turned out to be quite the hit as almost half the church took part in some role. I of course continued my tradition of being a sheep and really felt like I hit it this year thanks to help from my fellow sheep, Olya. We did the play not only for the kids at “Krepost” but also for the children at the local internaught where our church visits every Sunday, and also the children’s mental hospital. It was awesome having such a large group from the church go to be with these kids and share God’s love. We were able to hand out Christmas presents to all the kids too. Our Christmas service was held also on the 7th of January and we were able to rent the youth theatre in town to meet at. We filled the hall with friends and

family that were eager to come to our Christmas celebration. It was just amazing to see God bless our church and see everyone working together to put this on. Thank you so much for praying that God would provide a place and bless us. He did!!

Along the lines of that we are continuing to move forward in renting a bigger space for Sunday gatherings. We have found a museum that is willing to rent us their large hall with 30 foot ceilings for a price we can afford. We are praying and seeking God to know if this is His will. Please pray for our church that God would lead us. Also pray as we continue to serve in the internaught and mental hospital that God would call people and equip them to serve the kids there.

Please continue to pray for our kids club that God would give us wisdom with these kids and raising up teachers. Thank you so much for your prayers . I’m excited to see what is going to happen in this coming year.

Pécs, Hungary Missions Update

Our Family

As we were scheduling Balázs’ yearly cancer check, we were reminded of why we named our daughter Joelle. At last year’s exam, we were told by two doctors that we would be unable to have children but, as our daughters name demonstrates, “the Lord is willing.” Despite situations and circumstances, our Father moves to demonstrate His willingness to bless His children for His glory! Not only does He forgive, heal, restore, discipline, guide and strengthen us, He pours out such amazing blessings because He is willing. We enjoyed a quiet Christmas with just the three of us, eating way too many traditional Hungarian Christmas treats that people blessed us with. Balázs’ mom, step-dad, and younger brother came to visit after Christmas and we all enjoyed spending time together.

Ellie is doing well. She’s still battling a little cold, but her jaundice has cleared up. She loves to eat, and in just four weeks, she gained over three pounds and now weighs around nine. She certainly is a lot chunkier than the tiny little girl she emerged as, but she is amazingly cute with all that baby fat.

Ministry

Despite the new challenges of balancing ministry with family, the Lord continued to work despite us. After being in Pécs for just over 7 months the Lord reminded us of and clarified for us the vision He has given to us for ministry. Both of us have known that the Lord wanted to use us for a purpose, and He showed us that it is to lead people to Himself for healing and restoration. Coming together, the Lord has given us clear vision that He wants us to continue in this ministry of restoration and healing and is opening opportunities for that in the things we do here in Hungary. Clear teaching of the Word to the college group allows healing for many of these students who have experienced hurts from false teachings. Working with prisoners truly allows captives to be set free. Taking foster kids into a home and showing them Christ’s love allows healing unlike any other. Balázs’ gift of music continues to be used to bring people to Jesus, the only one who can heal and restore. It has been a great time of reflection and clarification that the Lord has given to us this past month. We look forward to how He continues to work this out in our lives.

The Lord did some unexpected things this month with respect to the foster care and prison ministries. Balázs met with the minister in charge of the prison ministries here in Pécs who was skeptical of our church but not long into their conversation said, “you guys are our brothers.” He is excited to work with us and has passed along the paperwork to the warden of the prison. Shortly after this, a man whom Balázs met at the job center called him and gave him the number of the person in charge of the prisons in this city who was excited to have our help. There may be other opportunities such as teaching English, music, etc. Balázs will be meeting with her in a couple of weeks. Please pray for our relationships with these people and for the Lord to open doors and direct us as He wants in this area.

Also this month, Balázs was contacted by a person who has a similar heart and vision for foster children in this country. He was asked to be on a board for a new foundation that is developing to help these kids in this country. We are unsure of what role this foundation will take in our foster program but are excited for the similar hearts and work of fellow saints. Please pray for this relationship and for our mutual support of one another as we work toward reaching these kids through loving families. The college group chose not to take a break despite the holidays and final exams, and we have been shocked at these students’ dedication to and hunger for the Word. Please pray that more students would come to the prayer meetings as we feel it is critical to spend time in prayer before taking these students out who are eager to evangelize.

The pastor is away for some weeks, and Balázs will be teaching the Sunday service for a couple weeks. Please pray that God would speak through Him to build up His body. He also continues to lead worship and is challenged weekly in bringing people before a holy God in worship. Please pray that the Lord would move in this church to become true worshippers of the Lord. At the Catholic school where Balázs teaches, there is conflict with the Bishop in charge and the teachers at the school. Please pray that God would work to resolve this and love for Him would reign in the hearts of all involved.

Prayer Requests

- That we would follow Jesus and obey Him at all costs individually and as a couple.

- Our marriage to continue to grow in the Lord’s love. Balancing family, ministry, and working.

-Wisdom with our little girl, filtering all of the advice we are given. Health for Ellie, God to heal her cold. The Lord’s provision for all we need. Guidance and provision for a home to raise foster children in.

-The city of Pécs to become overwhelmed with the presence of God in the lives of believers here and for people to be hungry to know the Lord. The students we are sharing the gospel with at the

universities to believe in the truth and be freed from lies.

-For our neighbors, doctors, and others we have regular contact with to see Jesus in our lives and His love for them.

- The church body to grow in their depth of love for the Lord. To love new people that are coming. For the church to increase in their commitment to the Lord and His Word. For a new place to meet. Wisdom and protection for the pastor. For Zoli to accept Jesus, for Victoria to return to church.

- For current ministries. For Balazs to be faithful in preparing for teachings and worship, for the Spirit to lead these times completely. For Leah to learn the new balance of taking care of the family and doing ministry. For continued opportunities of discipleship and language study.

- For upcoming ministries. For the paper work to be processed quickly for the prison work

Greetings from Chernihiv, Ukraine

Happy December!!! I am excited to write and let you know about some things that happened this past November and all that we are looking forward to this coming December. It is a busy time of year filled with New Years and Christmas programs. It seems that God is continuing to open doors for us to go into different areas of the city to share the love of God.

I think I shared with you before that I joined a fellow missionary here, Tracy, in going to one of the schools in the city to help out with their English class. We have a great relationship with the teacher and she is such an encouragement to see as she is very passionate about her students learning English. She has invited us to come and teach English through Bible stories or Christian ethics to her students. We go every week and are amazed to see God working in these children’s lives as they have so much fun learning English through hearing about God’s great love for them. Many of the children also come to our kids club, Krepost, that we are doing every other Saturday. God is blessing the club and we are seeing the kids grow in their knowledge of God as they come every time. Many of the kids are memorizing Bible verses that they recite at the the club. Our church is learning and growing too as they serve these kids and learn about ministering to children.

Another door that is opening is also in the same school that we are going to every week. The English teachers invited Tracy and I to come and meet with them every two weeks to get together and talk about women’s issues from a Christian point of view. To say the least we were fairly surprised by the invitation. The female teachers want it to be a sort of club or “sisterhood” as she described it. We don’t really know what to expect but are excited to get to know these women and share with them about the Bible.

Christmas Programs – We are pretty much doing Christmas parties and programs everywhere as there is quite the demand. We will be doing a Christmas party in the school sharing about Jesus’ birth and singing Christmas songs in English as requested by the teachers. We will also be doing a Christmas program for our kid's club. We are planning to invite all the kid’s parents to come and see the club. The children will be performing some Christmas songs and we will be performing a skit about Jesus’ birth with people from the church. We plan on sharing the skit with the children in the mental hospital and boarding schools/internaughts. We are also planning a Christmas day service as a church and want to rent a larger building to accommodate larger numbers as we are beginning to grow out of our little building. Christmas in Ukraine is on January 7th, which is a Sunday, so we are hoping many people will come.

Our church is doing really well and we continue to see God maturing the young believers here and challenge them to seek Him first in all things. We are meeting as a church this coming weekend to discuss all that has happened this past year and discuss our vision for this coming year. We are very excited for this coming year and expect God to do great things. Please pray for all these things mentioned above that God would pour our His Holy Spirit upon us and that many would come to know Him through all that we do. Merry Christmas to all of you – May the Lord bless you so much as you know Him. Thank you for your prayers and support - I am so thankful for you all.

Our Family
We went for our 37 week check-up for the baby, and the doctor said okay- everything is good- no baby for a while. We scheduled an ultra-sound and a non-stress test for the next week. The ultrasound showed our baby was still side-ways so we thought we had a while… On Friday the 24th at 9am we took our car in for repairs before our non-stress test. As we were leaving Leah felt something weird but wasn’t sure so just went on to the test. The test went fine and as we were about to leave we thought maybe we should ask about this. The doctor was called came and checked and sure enough Leah’s water had broken.

The night before at bible study Leah, thought she had turned and sure enough she had. The doctor induced labor because nothing had begun (an option we would not like to repeat). The Lord faithfully carried us through the intense 12 hours of labor before Leah progressed from 0 to 2. A good friend from the bible college came to help with the labor and was truly a huge blessing for us. At 2 centimeters the doctor gave an epidural which didn’t work but took the edge off, and 10 minutes later we were fully dilated and able to begin pushing.

Ten minutes later at just after midnight on her daddy’s birthday (the 25th) Joelle (Ellie) Stanzel was born. She was just under 6 pounds and 19 ½ inches. She had to be taken to the intensive care for 12 hours for observation because if being early and under weight. A couple of days later in the hospital, results showed she had intense jaundice and had to be taken to the incubator- this was very hard for Leah to hear her cry and see her but not be able to take care of her- God was faithful to encourage us about His love for us during this time. Another blood test on Wednesday showed Ellie had a bacterial infection (Leah had again been hospitalized a week before this for another food poising which passed to the baby). So after 5 more days of antibiotic treatment and 10 days total in the hospital, Ellie and Leah were able to go home! Ellie needs to return to the hospital on Tuesday for her jaundice levels- please pray God would rid her little body of this before the test. She is so amazing and truly a gift from God.

Ministry
The college group has been amazing as God continuously challenges us to stand up for Him and His Word despite objections and challenges from seemingly everywhere. We have had great times of teaching, fellowship and prayer. The Lord has encouraged us to separate the prayer meeting into guys and girls, which has proved to be excellent time of deepening friendships and being able to address issues that face the youth in this city. We are able to see God move in the hearts and characters of His children through these nights. At one of our church weekly prayer meetings, Balázs was able to lead the body in worship for the entire night. The church was built up in the time of praising and seeking the Lord. We will have this type of night every three weeks.

Leah was able to meet with several girls from the church and one who is struggling in making a decision to follow the Lord. The Lord richly blessed these times of discipleship in that He made them natural and relaxed but focused on Him.
Balázs continues to teach at the Catholic school and is constantly challenged to remain faithful in the small things as he weekly prepares to teach through the
Bible.

We are still pursuing the prison ministry paperwork and plan to meet again with the director in the coming weeks. We are also still pursuing foster care and are trusting the Lord in His perfect timing.

Prayer Requests

That we would follow Jesus and obey Him at all costs individually and as a couple.

Our marriage to contiue to grow in the Lord’s love. Balancing family, ministry, and working.

Wisdom with our little girl. Health for Ellie- God to heal her body from Jaundice. Healing for Leah’s cold and protection for Balázs and Ellie. The Lord’s provision for all we need. Guidance and provision for a home to raise foster children in.

The city of Pécs to become overwhelmed with the presence of God in the lives of beleivers here and for people to be hungry to know the Lord. The students we are sharing the gospel with at the universitites to believe in the truth and be freed from lies. For our neighbors, doctors, and others we have regular contact with to see Jesus in our lives and His love for them.

The church body to grow in their depth of love for the Lord. To love the new people that are coming. For the church to increase in their commitment to the Lord and His Word. For a new place to meet. Wisdom and protection for the pastor. For Zoli to accept Jesus. For Victoria to return to church. For a friend from the Bible college who left ministry and now has left the Lord.

For current ministries. Worship leading and teaching for Balázs both in the school and for the college group. Child care, discipling women and studying Hungarian for Leah.

For upcoming ministries. For the paper work to be processed quickly for the prison work.

Greetings!

Fall has turned into winter here in Ukraine. Snow has come and gone twice and the days are short and grey. But it still is not very cold and it's hard to complain after such a nice autumn.

As the ministries in our church are growing and moving forward we've seen that we need to be a lot more organized as a church. Everyone in the church has felt it over the last year but hasn't known how to go about it. Last month I started initiating some organization, much to everyone's delight, and I've been busy ever since helping the church get and stay organized.

I've also been going over all the video footages we shot over this last year to put together a dvd for our supporting churches and a dvd for Wayne that will communicate the vision of Calvary Chapel Kagarlyk and what God has been doing over the last couple years. Up till this year I've never really done anything with video but it seems to have been a good thing this year to show our church what each ministry is doing, and to show churches in America and Australia as well. Last week we had lunch with Jake and Anya Knotts (our friends who started a church in the city of Chernigov) and Jake was telling me about the possibilities of getting airtime on local TV. The TV station in Chernigov actually approached him and asked if he would like to do something for their channel. Jake asked me if I would be interested in helping him produce some short videos to air on local TV and of course I said yes. So we are praying about getting the right equipment to for everything and maybe in the next year we'll be able to produce a few short videos that can communicate the gospel on local TV. These videos would be useful not only in Chernigov but here in Kagarlyk and anywhere that we can buy or get permission to use some airtime.

Over this last month Liese and I were able to visit the churches in Priluki and Chernigov. I got to share a few minutes at the church service in Priluki and I taught the midweek bible study in Chernigov. We had a really good time in both churches and it was really good to "catch up" with all our old friends in Priluki. We want to continue to visit these churches to encourage them, foster relationships between the churches, and to keep the relationships that we have built with them over the last 5 years.

We are planning our yearly trip to America and we got our tickets last week. We will be in Arroyo Grande from December 14th until the beginning of January when we'll go to to Calvary Chapel Missions Conference in Murrieta. Then we'll go up to Yuba City and spend about 3 weeks up there and then a couple more weeks in Arroyo Grande. We are still not sure about when we will be at which church but we'll write again to let you know. We hope to see as many of you as we can. Write us or call us or something and we'll make sure that we get together. See you soon,

Hello to everyone back in the states. I hope everything is well. Life in Brazil is good. It has gotten much more routine here which is both good and bad. Routine is good because it allows you to anticpate things during your week and prepare better for them. But you never want to be completely into a routine, because you can get lazy and too comfortable.

Our church is doing pretty well here. We (Pastor David and I) are just praying that the believers that we have right now in our church will be strengthened and grow up more in the Lord; we want to see Pastors and missionaries raised up from our church. But we feel that for that to happen, we really need to focus our attention on the lives our members and give them all we have to offer, as little as it may be. If we are faithful in this, we believe the Lord will raise up leaders to be sent out and spread Bible teaching churches and ministries all over the country. That is my goal, hope and vision for my life down here in Brazil: to see leaders raised up and send out all over the country, multipling disciples everywhere.

So here's the question to you: what are you doing to help raiase up disciples where you live? Pray and ask the Lord for wisdom in this, for both you and us here!

Fall in Texas (Mandy and Eli update)

Greetings Friends and Family:

We hope you are doing well & are enjoying your fall wherever this may find you.

This fall has been wonderful. In a sense you can say we have truly experienced a Fall Harvest. We’ve had many wonderful friends come share and speak to our group. It was started off with Winkey Pratney, in October, and then we had a traveling missions team to come share with us at our annual missions summit for three days. Last week, one our dear friends, John Koeshall, who has served as a missionary for almost thirty years to European students and all over the world, came to be with us. It was a sweet, encouraging time for our students as well as for me personally. I felt incredibly affirmed and encouraged in all that the Lord has called us to here and in our lives.

Now the testing……begins. We’ve had such an incredible and challenging time of teaching and encouragement this past month, please pray that over these next weeks, our students would walk forward and take to heart all that we’ve been taught and heard. Pray specifically for a deep inward walk, that they would shore up deep roots in the Lord, that when testing comes they would endure, and character would be strengthened!

This past week, we have had our wonderful friends and supporters, Mark & Gwen, here visiting. We have had a good time together, and it's been neat for them to see all that they support and pray for each month.

My family is coming for Thanksgiving; please pray for our time and fellowship together. I am eager to have a taste of home here in Texas.

Eli & I are doing well. We will have lived here for one year December 15th, and we can hardly believe all that the Lord has let us be apart of here.

Pray for:

* Continued favor and time with our friends here that true discipleship would happen daily.

* Pray for the guys and girls that Eli & I spend time with each week, that we would have wisdom and favor with them and that our friendships would continue to grow in great ways.

October/November news

Greetings everybody,

Sorry for the delayed newsletter. I have spent most of the past month without my computer due to some repairs that had to be done and my many travels. The good news is things are going well and although it is already below freezing outside, our apartment is warm!!! I've yet to live in a warm apartment in Ukraine, so I'm very excited. This will be a quick note to fill you guys in on the past month and let you know what is happening this coming month.

Conference: Thank you for praying for the regional conference that we hosted. God really blessed our time together as we were able to just spend time together as friends and churches hearing from God's word, worshiping, playing games, and just hanging out. Everybody was greatly encouraged to gather together and catch up. It was so much fun to be with the Priluki church again as I miss them so much. Reenie and I are planning on going down this next month to spend a couple days with them and be encouraged by what God is doing in the church down there.

Kids Club: "Krepast" (Castle) Kids Club is going great. Every week new kids are coming and we have even begun to bring a few of the internaught kids every week. Last week we hosted a Kids Club with an English speaking twist. We did it in English for kids that study English in schools and want to learn and practice speaking. Since we have so many college students in the church who are majoring in the English Language, there were plenty of helpers and we filled our little church with little kids speaking English. Even a couple moms came and stayed which is what we have really been hoping for. Please pray that the kids that came last week would come this week to our normal Kids Club that is done in Russian/Ukrainian. Please continue to pray for Oksana, Mira, Anya, and Vova as they take part in teaching the Bible and using their gifts to serve the kids at the club.

Internaught: God is raising up a group to go every Sunday to the internaught. There are about 15 kids that come to Bible Study and there are more people in the church who God is leading to go there and love these kids. Pray that God would give wisdom to those leading that many children would come to know and trust in Jesus.

Up and Coming: Please pray for Jake and Anya as they have headed to Kiev to have their first baby, Maya. Pray for us as we seek to have a 4 week Women's Bible Study series for the many young women in our church regarding the issues they are facing.
Travels - please pray for us as we travel to Priluki to spend time with the church there. Pray also for my language studies with my friend/teacher Tanya that I would progress in my skills. Thank you so much for your prayers. Things are going really well and I am so excited about what God is doing in and through our church here.

Hello everyone! Well, it has been a little while since I sent out an update but I have some great things to share this week. As many of you know, a team from Calvary Chapel San Luis Obispo came down to Curitiba this week and we had a great time doing ministry with them! They came with great attitudes and a good work ethic, and totally blessed our church here.

On Tuesday we did a work day at the church to fix up some of the physical problems at our building. The team cleaned, painted, constructed and trimmed all sorts of things, making our building look so much better (no joke, our building was looking a little sorry!)! Then Wednesday day we did evangelism down town and saw about 12-14 people come forward on the streets to make decisions to follow Jesus. As always, the lasting fruit is yet to be seen, but it was exciting to see the Americans out there with our young Brazilians trying to share the Love of Jesus with Curitibanos!

That night we had special services for men and women led by James and Wendy Rey! I think the the greatest contribution of the team was not the evangelism or the work they did, but their attitudes and love for our body here. They really made an effort to connect with the church, to talk with them, to try to speak and learn Portuguese; our church saw the difference. Some of our church had gotten a little tired of Americans coming down because their attitudes were often one of superiority, or they were distant from the Brazilians. The Brazilians start to wonder why they even come if they don't want to try to get to know them. But this team really surprised them and won them over showing that not all Americans are too cool. I was stoked and proud to be from Calvary SLO!

We finished the week by sending the team off to another city down south, Florianopolis, and then going home exhausted, but satisfied by all our work! It was awesome! Now we are heading into the weekend with our normal services. Please pray for our youth, which I am leading, to grow in their intimacy in Christ and to develop a heart to seek His will at all times. The first official service last week with me in charge went really well; I couldn't have asked for a better time. I just want the Holy Spirit to teach the students and lead them to know Jesus more!

Greetings from Ukraine!

Life has been moving along at its usual pace here in Kagarlyk, Ukraine. The church has been growing as more people who are working at the mushroom farm are coming to church and beginning to seek God. A few have given their lives to Jesus and are learning to live in Him. Nearly all have seen such a difference in the people around them who are believers that they are bringing their friends and family to the job site to ask if they can come and work. Please pray for salvation for all who are coming to work at the mushroom farm.

A few weeks ago the guitar player in the worship team broke his finger and is out for six weeks. So I've been playing guitar more for worship. Another girl (her name is Tanya) who I've been having play with me once in a while, has decided to help and she and I are switching off this month playing every other Sunday. God is answering our prayers for the worship team that they would begin to have a desire to do more than sing and play, that they would desire to lead. Tanya is not that great of a guitar player but is is a talented musician and she is seeing that God will use her if she is willing to step up and be used.

We are planning our yearly trip to America. We've got our dates set and our plane tickets bought. We will be in America from January 10th - February 25th. We will spend the first bit of time up in Yuba City and we will be most likely be sharing in Calvary Gridley on Sunday the 15th. Then we'll head down to the central coast around the 1st of February. Our only confirmed speaking date is February 12th at Calvary SLO. Thank you for your prayers we hope to see you while we are in America,

Jakes big news!

Hi folks, just wanted to let you all know that I am getting married. Anya has been one of my best friends for over 5 years now and it just so happened that we fell in love. I met her on my first trip to Ukraine back in 99 back when I spent a summer here. She of course didn’t want anything to do with me back then, I was a loud American teenager. After I returned to Ukraine in 2000 Anya became a good friend as she would come out on the weekends to Priluki to help out in the church (she is a great translator, speaks better English than I do). Then she moved to Priluki after finishing school and not too long after we moved to Chernigov together with a few others. So, I guess you can say that we have spent a lot of time together and know each other well.She is a great girl, I am a happy guy! We are planning on getting married sometime in January and then coming to the States for a month or two as soon as we can get a visa. I know there are a handful of ladies back home that have been praying faithfully for me to get a wife for a long time now. Well, your prayers have been answered.

A trip to Chernigov

This Sunday we drove up to Chernigov with a group from our Church. Jake had asked me to come and teach the Sunday morning bible study as he was going to be out of town so I thought it would be fun to bring some people from Kagarlyk to fellowship with the church in Chernigov. I think it was encouraging for the crew from Kagy and I hope that we were an encouragment to the Chernigov church.

After the service we went over to the house of one of the missionaries and had a big lunch with everyone who wanted to come. It was really good to see the church there and see how much people have grown in the last couple years. We all enjoyed the fellowship.

Before heading home we went on a little tour of the city and took some pictures. Here we are in Chernigov's main park.

When you are waiting in line to board the plane you are about to jump out of it really isn't all that comforting to see someone do engine work on the plane. Welcome to Ukraine.

When we showed up (Chris Mahar, an old bible college buddy and myself) to go skydiving we should have known that it was going to be sketchy. It was. The veteran who fought in the Afghan war from the 80's gave us 3 hours of instruction. Us and 80 other lucky youngsters. He liked the fact that we were Yankees, he kept telling us how the USSR stuff was way better than NATO stuff. Yeah right.

We were using WWII era equipment that some guys had used fighting Germans. I liked to imagine that the Russian wearing my gear lived through the jump because I didn't think I was going to.

The plane looked like a tin can with some wings, it sounded like a popcorn machine falling through the sky.

I was the first one to jump and let's just say I was standing at the door of the plane for what seemed like an eternity waiting for the guy to hit me on the back and say "your gone!"

Once I fell out I was doing summersaults and flipping like a gymnast. My chute took and then peace, that is all I can say. From the tin can, guys yelling, falling, wind, freaking out, to total peace and quiet. I took a photo while in the air and then started thinking about how to land.

They said that you could control the chute, they weren't being all that truthful. You land wherever the wind wants you to land.

I forgot to disable my safety chute and had to land with two chute open, which made for difficulties. Once I hit the ground I was drug about 2 miles before being able to knock the wind out of my chutes.

Maybe this isn't all that missionary but I definitely learned a lot about the Soviet mind. I think my little trip outside of town to jump out of a plane taught me more about the USSR than all of the books I have ever read.

I highly recommend it. In the last 25 years no one has died.

What does that mean? It is Latin for "in the light".
Where did it come from? I searched through the Latin vulgate for a few hours looking for a cool sounding phrase.
Why? I needed a name for our newspaper. I wanted something strange to get peoples attention.

It has evolved a bit since then. Now it is the name of our Publishing house. After bellyaching for a few years that there are no good books in Russian I decided to try to get some printed up. After reading "the passion of Jesus Christ" by Piper I thought that it would be a good book to start off with.

Since then we secured rights to two other books by Piper through Crossway books - "God is the gospel" and "seeing and savoring Jesus Christ" should be in hand by Christmas.

I am convinced that this is something God really wants me to put effort into because I have been so blessed by reading quality books like those above and I know that He will bless others as well, namely, those that I don't know and will never meet on this little earth who live in Russia and Ukraine. Printing books will build their faith and further the kingdom of God.

I guess you can say that I love reading and have grown to love God more through reading. I highly recommend good Christian reading. It wasn't an accident that God spoke to mankind through a book and I know that it wasn't another accident that he appointed teachers in the church and books to be the means teachers equip!

I am shooting for 6 books in 06'. Lord willing it will happen.

Please pray that the Lord will provide the amount still needed to print 7,000 books next month.

Here is an update I sent out a few days back on what is happening here in Chernigov. Hope it helps!

Hi folks,

We have started up our English club again and would appreciate your prayers. A handful of believers in our church have come to know the Lord through our previous club and I really believe that God wants to use this event again to make himself known. Pray that the unbelievers would see that knowing God and having a right relationship with him (as seen in us) is much better than life apart from him. I pray that we would be a powerful testimony of the goodness and value of following Christ.

Conor and Koren, who recently moved up to Chernigov to join the mission team, have had to take an unexpected emergency trip back to the states. Their little girl Emma was very sick and not getting better. Turns out she has Celiac disease, which means she can't eat anything with wheat in it. Thankfully, she is getting better now that they know what the problem is and they are planning on returning as soon as her health is restored. Pray for them to be strengthened by God and for the health of Emma.

The church is doing well. It seems that many have taken certain responsibilities upon themselves and we are functioning a lot more like a body. I am blessed and hope to see God give more direction and vision to the individuals in church. Pray for greater faith to go forward as a body in the purposes God has for us.

I am planning on taking a trip to St. Petersburg to the annual Christian Publishers book exhibition in early December. I really believe that God wants me to continue pursuing translating quality literature into Russian. We are working on two more books and hoping to have them in hand by the end of the year. I hope to shoot for 6 books in '06. Please pray for open doors, relationships to be built with others who are publishing here, and the Lord's guidance and provision.

I am currently writing new articles for our newspaper and hoping to have a larger print run with more material to reach the whole city this time. Pray that it would be an instrument of truth confronting the 300,000 people living in total ignorance of the things of God.

I personally am doing well and appreciate your prayers and support. I really believe that God wants to save many souls in Chernigov and would ask that you pray for a spiritual reformation to take place here.

Oh, that these people would regard God's name as holy and honor Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior! Pray for God's light to shine into the darkened hearts and that it would bring the spiritually blind to see and deaf to hear their maker calling them to come!

It's been a beautiful fall this year here in Ukraine. The weather has been abnormally warm and sunny and we've been enjoying the fall colors.

Usually in these updates I just write about how we are doing and the things we are involved in, but I would like to give you a little bigger picture this time so that you can know what God is doing here in Kagarlyk.

This summer a small group from the church started visiting the children in the local hospital once a week. The hospital system here in Ukraine is quite different from the American hospital system. Here it is a place where you go to be treated for any sickness you have. If you have a bad cold you check into the hospital for a week. So in the hospital there are generally people with anything from bronchitis to the flu to kidney problems. And they just sit in the hospital doing nothing all day. It is a great time to share God's love, to pray for people, and visit bored and lonely kids. So the group of two or three ladies go each week and share about Jesus, bring the kids a snack, and color or read a Bible story with the kids. It is great to see the church going out to people with God's love.

There is a missionary here from New Zealand named Magdala. She, for the past year, has been teaching English classes for anyone in the city who wants to learn English. This fall she was joined by a young lady in the church who is finishing her teaching degree and together they are broadening their classes to teach ages 9 and up. They have kids, teenagers and adults come to the classes, some of them Christians from the church and the rest just people who want to learn to speak English. Through the lessons their goal is to build relationships with their students and show God's love and what it means to have a relationship with Him.

Over the past few years Calvary Chapel Kagarlyk has set up a computer lab and offered computer classes for kids who want to learn how to use computers (and some who just want to play computer games after the lesson). This fall some of the people who taught the classes have decided to be involved in different ministries, but there are still a couple of classes a week. The goal of this ministry is to be able to build relationships with kids, to have good wholesome environment where they can come and learn something useful as well as have fun, and to show them that God loves them.

Then there is the mushroom enterprise. What is the mushroom enterprise? It is a business enterprise of mushroom farming aimed at creating a Christian work environment for men (and women) to be able to make a living, provide for their families, and at the same time learn to live in God’s grace. The reason for such an endeavor is that it is nearly impossible to find good work in Kagarlyk; so men who are trying to provide for their families go to Kiev and work six days a week and spend the other day with their families. Or they simply just drink. Over the last month four new people began working at the mushroom farm, and one of them a lady named Natasha gave her life to God. The others have stopped drinking (a prerequisite for starting to work there) and are coming to church each week. There is a need for more workers as the enterprise expands, so please pray that God would bring people who are ready to respond to the Gospel, that they would come simply to find work and instead find eternal life! Also pray for the men who work there that they would be rooted and grounded in God, for those who have not yet given their lives to God that they receive His salvation.

Another ministry that started over the winter at our church is an aerobics ministry. Sounds funny, but there is a young lady who wants to stay fit so she invites teenage girls to come and do aerobics with her twice a week at the church. Lately there has been quite a few of them and it seems to be spiritually fruitful as they fellowship afterward.

We are praying right now about an opportunity to visit an all girls internaught (boarding school for orphans) that is in a nearby village. One of the ladies who is involved in children’s ministry wants to visit these girls so we are praying God would open the door. Please pray that if this is something that God has for the church here that He would give us favor with the director of the internaught and the teachers.

So there it is. I think I covered just about everything. There is also the worship ministry that Liese is helping lead, and I’m playing guitar in, weekly prayer meetings, women’s bible study, and youth group. But I think those will have to wait for another time. I just want to encourage you that God is working. As you pray for us, for the work here in Ukraine know that God is answering your prayers and that you are not alone. There are people all over the world who join in with you in prayer for Ukraine. Update from Kagarlyk [Ukraine]

Greetings from Ukraine!

Summer ended last week and the weather got cold, but the good news is that it warmed back up and is sunny and beautiful! Kids are back in school, vacations are over, and for most people here in Ukraine life is getting back into its routine.

Liese and I took a little vacation last week and went to visit friends in the cities of Nezhyn and Chernigov. We spent a couple days in each city and it was really good to spend more than just a few hours with our friends. It was also encouraging to see the churches in those places and how people are growing in the Lord.

A couple weeks ago I did my first sermon in Russian. Everyone who can translate had gone on vacation so I was left to fend for myself. Liese said it was good, but I don't know. I still need about 6 hours to prepare to teach in Russian on top of my study time, but I'm going to be trying more and more to make the time to do it. Also I'm going to be looking for a Russian tutor to help Liese and I step up to the next level of grammar.

Liese is still leading worship twice a month, and I'm helping out playing guitar once a month. I looked back over the summer and realized that I played guitar more Sundays than I didn't play, so I'm looking forward to being the "backup" guitar player again. On Saturday we are going to have kind of worship retreat day. Everyone in the church who is involved in worship is going to get together for prayer and bible study. We want it to be a time to seek God's direction for us as individuals on the worship team, for us as a team, and for us as a church as relates to worship. Please pray that it would be an encouraging time for us all, that God would speak to us and renew our zeal to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

Greetings from Kagarlyk! I put together a pdf file of pictures that I hope you all can view. I just wanted to give you an idea of how summer outreaches looked.

Liese and I have been enjoying getting back into daily life after all the craziness of summer outreaches. Liese continues to lead worship twice a month and because the worship team is a little short on guitar players I have been joining them a couple times a month playing guitar. It has been fun leading worship together with my wife. It is something we never thought we'd be doing as we are not the most gifted people musically.
This week we are helping a couple in our church prepare for their wedding which will be on the 20th. This is the time of year for weddings it seems, just last week we were in Priluki for a wedding of some of our friends there. It was really good to see all our Priluki friends. We are looking forward to the mellowness of fall, and seeking God as to what to do next. We are praying about starting a bible study for the men, or perhaps a home group. Also this fall we are going to try to find a Russian teacher to tutor us a little more as we try to make the step from speaking Russian to being fluent in Russian.
Our prayer needs are for continued strength and vision for the ministries we are involved in. Also for new vision for what else God would have us be doing as a couple and as a church. Please pray that we would find a language teacher. Thank you for all your prayers for us, prayer is a huge support for us. May God bless you and keep you,

We are really enjoying our "homeland" and all of us seem to be pretty well integrated into life way-down-under. We have spent the last few (cold) winter months enjoying team sports with the kids. Terah has excelled in netball (sorta like basketball & ultimate frisby with no backboard on the hoop, very popular in the common wealth countries), and Caleb and Owen have become keen of rugby (picking up where Dad left off at University!). Scott has enjoyed coaching and referreeing and we have found opportunity to share Christ with some of our children's team mates, especially Zach & his family. With Mum in support the kids have been well cheered for.

so we'll see if that photo came up. I think it necessary to attempt to put a picture up seeing as I am the only missionary in Ukraine with better than slow/disconnected-internet access. So this is blogging ... Alright well - Priluki is doing well - lots of changes are happening which is inevitable on the mission field but God is showing Himself faithful as always. One of the missionaries here had a vision during a prayer meeting a few months ago and it showed a green pasture that had a few trees and it was very beautiful - then came a great fire and everything was burned and charred. With time green began to spring forth and huge strong oak trees began to grow and these trees grew stronger and bigger than the ones that were there before. We are praying and trusting the Lord that He will bring forth strong oak trees amongst the Ukrainians here with whom and to whom we serve and minister. As trials and testing happens I have found much comfort and hope in His faithfulness believing that He will complete that which He has begun here in me and in the lives of the people around me. So that's my blog for now - Maybe you'll find it encouraging

Greetings! So much has happened since the last time I sent out an update that I'll just try to give you a brief picture of what has been happening here this last month. To start off we ("we" being the summer ministry team in the church here in Kagarlyk) did a series of family festivals in and around Kagarlyk. We had about 30-50 kids, many with their parents, come to each festival where we had bible stories, songs, games, skits, and "fun for the whole family". We were able to share the gospel with all who came, and because of the festival here in Kagarlyk a woman and her son have come to our church. We also did two soccer tournaments, one with anyone in the city who could get a team together and the other with the villages surrounding Kagarlyk. Both times we had 6 teams come and they all had a great time and were very glad that there was someone organizing soccer events because they all just love to play. We were able to build relationships with many of the guys and plant seeds of the gospel. Because our church building is in the center of the city with a small park in the front of it we decided to do a couple of street concerts. We had a few problems getting bands to come, but it all worked out okay. A group from Chernigov came down and played music and shared what God had done in their lives. It was encouraging for our church and for theirs, and people came and heard the gospel as well as music.

An outreach team from Phoenix, Arizona came out for a couple of weeks and the helped us with the festivals, played soccer a tournament, and played music for the second street concert that we put on. We also spent a lot of time on the streets in the evenings inviting people to come to the different events we were planning and sharing the gospel. Although there was little response from people, just being out on the streets with the gospel and shining God's light is something we as a church feel we should be doing. God will bring the fruit in His time.

Vacation Bible School

This last week we had a vacation bible school type thing at our church. The children's ministry leaders planned it all, the summer ministry team did all the work, and I found that I was almost not needed. It was wonderful to not be needed. They all did a wonderful job of everything, learned a lot about ministry, about team work, and the best was they got to see God reach kids and parents with His love. Between 30 and 50 kids showed up each day and throughout the course of the week most of them prayed to ask Jesus to forgive their sins. The last day of camp we had a talent show for their parents to come to and about 20 parents came. We were able to share the gospel with them and they got to see what their kids learned about God's love. So that is a small glimpse of what has been going on. I hope to get some pictures together this next week and make them e-mailable so that you can see a little better what God has been doing.

Thank you for your prayers this last month, God is certainly answering them and will continue to answer. I'm sure that we will continue to see the fruit of all that was done for some time to come. Scott and Jebraun were some of the very first people to ever walk into our home shortly after we moved to SLO to plant the church. Scott was a Cal Poly rugby player who had just barely come to know the redeeming work of Christ. Scott was also some what of a local legend on the Central Coast especially at some of the more low profile surf spots. Scott carved out his reputation by being the "i'll paddle around you on the inside and drop in, and call you off of MY wave" surfer. Anyways, where was I......oh yea, Scott got saved! Over the past few years the Lord has called Scott and Jebraun to a young and thriving church they planted in New Zealand. - B

::Recent Happenings:
Haere Mai (Welcome)! It’s been a rather busy month in the Bay of Plenty. We have seen a few exciting things happen, including a three folks getting baptized and the addition of some Women’s Bible studies in the region. We have been struggling to define the role we are playing in God’s work here (not that it’s particularly important), but it would seem we have come up with a label: Circuit Preachers. We have been thoroughly enjoying going between Taupo, Rotorua & Tauranaga encouraging the groups there and enjoying the brethren. It has been a stretching yet strengthened season for us.

☼ Seeing people baptized is always a blessing. It was great to see about 30 members of Ryan’s family attend the ocean “immersion”. Katherine and Amanda were good sports about the freezing water temp, too!

::Prayer Requests:
● About a week after their baptism Ryan and Katherine, as well as Katherine’s mum Patricia, were involved in a car accident. They were rear ended by a driver traveling at about 70kph. They are soar but safe. Kathrine is still suffering from a sprained neck.

● We continue to have technical problems with our FM radio transmitter in Rotorua (Taupo is running fine). A technician was scheduled to come and take a look at it and came down with his “worst cold in 10 years”. Please pray for the Lord’s will to be done with this in His strength.

Continuing the 2005 series of interviews with pastors from various Calvary Chapels around Europe, Calvary News Network has put several questions to Pastor Paul Sisemore of CC Priluki. Answering from the Eastern European frontline, Pastor Paul shares about how God called him into the ministry, about how that call has remained absolutely foundational, and about the “Book of Acts scenarios” which the church is going through in Ukraine right now.

What is God doing in, through, and around CC Priluki these days?
The church continues to have new visitors each and every week. In addition to this, we have had many “Christmas Teas”. We work in many orphanage homes as well as children’s homes for invalids and we also help out in schools. We invite the teachers to come in order to say thank you for their service to the community and also to bless them with a holiday, small party, and a gift. We often have the entire staff show up. During these times we also share about how the Lord has changed our lives. Different men and women from our fellowship share during these times.

What are some of the church needs that CC Priluki is lifting up to God in prayer right now?
At this time we are transferring much of the government of the church over to nationals. God has blessed us with many capable men who serve along side of me. This is also happening in the women’s ministry as well. We are rich beyond belief in this area. Pray that God would gift, empower, and lead these men and women as they assume more of the burden and responsibility for daily ministries. Also, we have a Bible College that will be starting in March for Ukrainians. We have a great opportunity to help train yet another group of pastors in Calvary Chapel as well as in some of the other churches here in Priluki. Our relationship with other pastors in the city is very good and many desire further training.

Ukraine went through a turbulent period in connection with the presidential election in late 2004, with the opposition's candidate being poisoned and revolution-like demonstrations in large parts of the country. Has the dubbed “Orange revolution” had any form of effect on the ministry opportunities in Ukraine?
The open door in Ukraine to minister has been open and continues to stay open. However, due to the election, many came together putting away differences and began to pray for Ukraine and the president. Each morning thousands gathered in the center of Kiev to pray and if I may say, that was the most astounding part of the “orange revolution”. Several people from our fellowship went to be a part of this and brought back glowing reports. As we have been praying for an outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit upon Ukraine and real revival, we think perhaps this is the beginning! People are ready to hear! I have never lived in a place so open and I have ministered in the USA, Mexico, Russia, and Ukraine. I feel as if I am living in the Book of Acts......
